"Prestwich Carnival 2008 - a huge success" (June 19th 2008)
Prestwich Carnival 2008 took place on Sunday 18th June (Fathers Day) at St Mary’s Park in Prestwich.

The Prestwich Carnival which began 11am was a huge success and was attended by Prestwich residents who came out in the glorious sunshine in droves.

The Prestwich Carnival (organised by the Carnival Committee chaired by David Curtis) was officially opened by the Town Crier of Blackpool (pictured above) and was led by the Mayor - Councillor Peter Ashworth (below pictured middle), MP Ivan Lewis (below pictured left).

After the Carnival was officially opened by the Town Crier - his Tartan Cilted guards then militantly marched through the streets to the sound of their bagpipes and drums.

Carnival rose queens carried by a range of vehicles from sports car drawn carriages to brightly coloured trucks elegantly moved along the streets.

A number of dancing Troupes including the Halewood Hawksthen filled then streets.

Various charities were also out in support of the Prestwich Carnival including 'MedEquip4Kids', 'Save The Children', and 'St John Ambulance'.

Bright red Vintage trucks from 'F. Robinson Brewery' in Stockport and 'Warburton’s Family Bakers' joined the carnival procession as it moved steadily down Rectory Lane Prestwich, where a number of Boys' and Girls’ Brigades including St. James Church Lads and Church Girls Brigade of Gorton also proudly marched.

Prestwich Arts College were out again this year onboard a brightly coloured truck that filled the streets with music and at the same time cleared the way for an echelon of young cyclists representing the 'National Cycling Academy.

Finally at the tail end of the procession - the crowds lining the streets of Prestwich were witness to the most impressive and colourful Brazilian style performance from the 'Manchester School of Samba' dance group. At the front front of the group was the dance lead dressed in a bright yellow sunflower patterned costume who confidently lead the group - flanked by six very talented and glamorous dancers with a group of brightly coloured feather covered percussionists following closely behind.

The rest of the afternoon was packed with activities from belly dancing to performances by a ‘Kylie Minogue’ tribute singer, a range of stalls hosting a number of local organisations and groups and a large fairground with both traditional and more modern attractions.
